Connecting to nature through poetry and prose
Charles Foster declares “I’m losing confidence in words” in the opening lines of his July, 2021 essay “Against Nature Writing”. In this article, I will explore Foster's argument and then propose that haiku could be the solution.
The 1960s brought an awareness of an emerging environmental crisis. This crisis captured the attention of poets and led to the creation of ecopoetry. Ecopoetry can then be separated into three large categories: nature poetry, environmental poetry, and ecological poetry.
Poetry can be the perfect way to celebrate our connection to the natural world. Poems about nature often tap into the essence of a moment, express the notion of biophilia, and will propel the reader beyond the written word.
